Why is bilingual family history important?

The issue of language often arises in the stories of emigrant families. The first generation still lived, thought, and remembered in Hungarian, while English became dominant for the second and third generations. This is a natural process, but it poses a serious challenge to the preservation of family memory.

A story can only live on if it is understandable to all generations involved. Bilingual family histories are therefore particularly important: they form a bridge between the memories of grandparents and the questions of grandchildren. If stories exist in only one language, they can easily become disconnected from those who have grown up in a different linguistic environment.

RootStories publications are deliberately produced in both Hungarian and English. The goal is not just translation, but to ensure that the stories remain culturally meaningful in both languages. This way, younger members of American Hungarian families can also understand where their ancestors came from and what Hungarian heritage means to them.
